First news that Herbert had been killed in action was communicated in a letter from the second lieutenant in his regiment. Information later confirmed by official letter from the War Office.

Herbert is recorded as being a very promising youth. Of a very quiet and retiring disposition he was universally esteemed.

Herbert was the second son of Fred Bateman, for many years the superintendent of Lumb Baptist Sunday School and was a teacher in the Sunday School as well as being the treasurer of the Lumb Baptist Old Folks Treat Committee.

Accounts vary as to how long he had been in France before his death. Some say 20 days, others five weeks.
